EFIK PROVERBS: THEIR BEAUTY, INTERPRETATION AND APPLICATION (Book 1)

Efik language is a Nilo – Hamitic tongue of the Afroasiatic language family, deriving from Efik origin of Nubia, the ancient civilization in the Nile region. The language has numerous similarities in words between it and Egyptian, Ethiopian, Hebrew, Phoenician and other languages of nationalities of the region they had interacted with whilst dwelling there. (1,2,3,4,5). Due to the present day location of the Efik people, their language is linguistically classified as a Niger-Congo language of the Cross River family.
Efik is the mother tongue of the Efik people who are indigenes of Calabar South, Calabar Municipality, Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Odukpani Local Government Areas of Cross River State of Southern Nigeria. There are also Efiks as indigenes of Ikorofiong, Ibuno, Enwang, Ifiayong,
Obot Itu, Efiat, Atabong, Okobo, etc, all in Akwa Ibom State. It is estimated that apart from the nearly a million indigenous Efik people, about three million others speak Efik as a second language. This second group comprises people of Ejagham ethnic group and others from Akamkpa, Biase, Yakurr, etc LGAs of Cross River State, and a large percentage of indigenes of Akwa Ibom State, particularly those from Oron group. In fact, in the olden days, the knowledge and use of the language extended to the Igbos of the present day Abia State, particularly in Ohafia, Arochukwu and Abiriba communities. It was the language of communication in trade and commerce, education and propagation of Christianity. Efik is also spoken in southwestern Cameroon in the area known as Bakassi Peninsula.
