Democracy In America, Volume 1 of 2The Americans live in a democratic state of society, whichhas naturally suggested to them certain laws and a certainpolitical character. This same state of society has, moreover,engendered amongst them a multitude of feelings and opinionswhich were unknown amongst the elder aristocratic communities ofEurope: it has destroyed or modified all the relations whichbefore existed, and established others of a novel kind. Theaspect of civil society has been no less affected by thesechanges than that of the political world. The former subject hasbeen treated of in the work on the Democracy of America, which Ipublished five years ago; to examine the latter is the object ofthe present book; but these two parts complete each other, andform one and the same work.
